First Prizes and Judges Announcement!

Ready to win big? Here’s the 2019 prizes!

Hey Filmmakers,

We hope the school holidays gave you some time to work on your film! Whether that was looking for inspiration on an adventure, knuckling down and crafting your story, or seizing the days off and heading out there to film.

You’ve still got almost 10 weeks until the September 23rd deadline, which is an absolute mountain of time to get creative. We’ll be sending out more tips all the while to keep you going.

Today we’re excited to announce not only our major prizes for the competition, but who the judging panel of Australian filmmakers that will be studiously watching your film to award those prizes!

All finalists will have their original short films screen at the Nextwave Youth Film Awards during SWIFF’20 in January, as well as Australia wide as part of Youth Week 2020 in April.

Awarded at the Gala event will be all awards and prizes including:

  • Professional Sound Kit from RODE Microphones
  • Short courses at NIDA
  • Short courses at AFTRS
  • Headphones from Skullcandy
  • $ to spend on Afends clothing

Judges Panel

Sascha Ettinger-Epstein is an award winning documentarian with an eye for realism.

Soda_Jerk are a two person art collective who use editing to blur the lines of film and art.

Mark Grentell is a director and writer behind Aussie comedy hits like The Merger.

And they all started where you are now, creating short films, working in theatre, or just messing around with editing. They’ll watch every shortlisted film from the competition, and have the hard job of awarding the final scores and awards.
