Beyond the Bubble: Coffs Harbour’s own comp category

Beyond the Bubble - films under 1 minute!

Hey filmmakers,

We have some exciting news! We’ve teamed up with Coffs Harbour City Council for Beyond the Bubble – a new category of the 2020 Nextwave short film competition for films under 1-minute, just for folks living in Coffs Harbour aged between 10 – 25 years.

We all know this year has been pretty crazy, and we’re all coping with the change in lifestyles as best we can, we want to hear how you’ve gotten creative under COVID!

Scroll down ‘beyond the bubbles’ (get it?!) to find out more.

How does it work?

Films must be under 1 minute in length.

That includes everything! Intro, end credits, the lot.

You must be between the ages of 10-25 and living in the Coffs Harbour LGA to enter Beyond the Bubble.

If you’re outside of Coffs Harbour you can still enter the Nextwave main comp! Details here!

You can film on phones, but it must be filmed in portrait or vertical mode.

Think in the style of a TikTok (this ratio is called 9:16).

The theme of the films are to be centered around what life has been like under COVID restrictions.

What have you been doing with your extra free time? Have you been spending more time with your pets or family? Maybe you’ve been learning an instrument? How different has it been from your regular life?

Films should be family friendly.

Your films could screen in front of thousands of people, including families. So keep it PG!

Entries are now open!

They close on Nov 27th at the very end of the day – 11.59pm!

You can enter as many times as you like!

Got a few ideas? More than a few? Film them all! Get as creative as you want.

The best 5 films will premiere at the Nextwave Youth Film Awards held during SWIFF next January, and there are some pretty awesome prizes up for grabs, including a brand new 128GB iPad!

For more information on how to enter, head over to Beyond the Bubble on our website.

Need a little prompt?

We want to know how you’ve been spending your time during COVID restrictions. Here are a few prompts to get your creative juices flowing. You can answer a few of these questions if you’d like, or you can think of your own, as long as they fit the guidelines above.

  • Have you picked up a hobby?
  • Have you been spending more time with your family?
  • Have you been keeping in contact with your friends?
  • What does a day in your life during COVID restrictions look like?
  • If you could spend your time under COVID restrictions with anyone, who would it be and why?
  • What was the best thing that happened to you during COVID?
  • Is there anything that you’re looking forward to doing after restrictions end?
  • Is there something special that you would like to do after restrictions end?
  • What’s coming next for your after COVID?
  • What do you think you’ll be doing one year from now?

These are  of course just suggestions to get you started, you can make your short film about whatever subject you like, as long as you’re thinking about this past year and what it’s meant for you!

Get creative, get filming, and of course, have fun!
